What Does It Mean to Live by Faith?
A biblical reflection for daily Christian living.
Living by faith is not about ignoring reality — it's about trusting God's promises above our circumstances. For the Christian, faith is the foundation of everything: our relationship with God, our decisions, and our hope.
The Biblical Definition of Faith
When we speak of Christian faith, we're not talking about a vague feeling or a groundless hope. The Bible gives us a clear and powerful definition:
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
Notice the two key words: substance and evidence. Biblical faith is not blind — it is grounded in the character of God, in His proven faithfulness throughout history. It is substance, not wishful thinking. It is evidence, not doubt dressed up as optimism.
God never asks us to believe without reason. He asks us to believe based on who He is and what He has already done. Every fulfilled promise in Scripture is evidence that we can trust those yet to come.
Faith in Daily Life
Christian faith is not just for Sundays. It is lived out every single day — in every decision, every trial, every moment of uncertainty. Living by faith means:
- Trusting God with your finances — when the month stretches long and resources run short.
- Trusting God with your relationships — when marriage feels hard or loneliness weighs heavy.
- Trusting God with your health — when the diagnosis is frightening or the answer is slow.
- Trusting God with your decisions — when the path is unclear and you need direction.
The Apostle Paul wrote with a clarity that still resonates today:
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
Faith is not the absence of problems — it is peace in the middle of them. It's not that everything goes the way we want, but that we trust God is working even when we cannot see it.
The Heroes of Faith
Hebrews chapter 11 is known as the "hall of faith." There we find ordinary men and women who did extraordinary things — not by their own strength, but by their trust in God:
- Abraham left his homeland without knowing where he was going, simply because God asked him to.
- Moses faced the most powerful empire in the world with nothing but a staff and a word from God.
- Rahab risked her life hiding the spies of Israel, believing that their God was the true God.
The common thread among all of them: they obeyed BEFORE seeing the result. They didn't wait for guarantees. They acted on God's Word, and God honored their faith.
The question for you today is simple but profound: what is God asking you to trust Him with? What step of faith do you need to take, even without seeing the end of the road?
The Faith that Unites Us as a Church
The Christian church exists because of faith. Faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. Faith in His Word as an infallible guide. Faith that He is still building His church today, just as He promised:
"Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
When we gather as a Christian church, we do so not out of tradition or habit — we do it because we believe. We believe God is real, that His presence transforms, and that together we are stronger than alone. The Christian faith was not designed to be lived in isolation. It was designed for community.
At IPUL Panama, we are a community of faith where every person can grow, ask questions, learn, and experience the power of God in their daily life.
